Betting on the Impossible: Storytelling, Risk & the Future of Hollywood

A producer’s view of conviction, creative risk, intellectual property, and what it takes to keep betting on ambitious stories before the market has proven them.

Every great film begins as a bet. A bet on a story. A director. An audience. And the belief that something no spreadsheet can fully predict will connect with millions of people around the world. Few producers have made those bets as successfully, or at such scale, as Graham King.

For more than thirty-five years, he has built films at the intersection of creative ambition and commercial conviction. The Departed. The Aviator. Gangs of New York. Hugo. Blood Diamond. Argo. Films that became critical landmarks, global successes, and enduring cultural assets.

Graham understands that producing is not simply about financing a movie. It is about assembling the entire architecture required to make the impossible real: securing the rights, choosing the director, aligning the creative team, structuring the capital, and protecting the original conviction through years of development and production.

Then came Bohemian Rhapsody. The highest-grossing music biopic in the history of cinema, earning more than $900 million worldwide, proof that a culturally iconic story, executed at the highest level, could generate global demand on a scale few believed was still possible.

And this year, Graham did it again. Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming the first biopic in cinema history to reach that milestone. Not simply the first music biopic. The first biopic. Ever.

His career is a case study in how stories become global assets. He identifies subjects with emotional power and enduring audience demand, then builds the creative and financial structures to carry them to the world. At a moment when streaming, artificial intelligence, and new sources of capital are rewriting the rules of entertainment, his perspective could not be more timely.

Moderating this conversation is Brian Nugent, Founder of Sway Capital and co-founder of Sobey Road Entertainment, where he is producing a slate of scripted films and premium documentaries alongside leading filmmakers. He has built his career at the intersection of filmmaking, technology, and capital. He is not here as a spectator.

This is a conversation about the future of film. About who takes the risk, how creative conviction survives the machinery of Hollywood, and what it takes to build stories that become part of culture.
